What is a metamaterial flat lens?

Unlike a normal lens, which has a curved shape, a metamaterial flat lens is an innovative type of lens consisting of fine metal patterning on a flat surface. It uses the interaction between this pattern and electromagnetic waves to focus the electromagnetic waves. Whereas a conventional lens refracts electromagnetic waves thanks to its curved shape, this contrasting approach allows lenses to be made with a reduced height and lighter weight.
